Genzyme: Pompe Disease Testing Program

Pompe disease is a rare genetic disorder, with symptoms similar to muscular dystrophy. Genzyme, developer of a therapy for Pompe teamed up with the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) to promote diagnostic testing for Pompe. I created a letter packet for this program, which was sent to MDA clinic physicians. The materials highlighted the advantages and ease of testing for Pompe.

Prescribing and Payment Procedures

Pompe testing will be made universally available to all patients at risk for the disease and who receive a prescription from an MDA clinic physician. To order and receive payment for the test, follow these simple steps.

1. Provide the prescription. The prescription must be written by a member of the MDA clinic team.

2. Order the test. The labs offering the enzyme assay for Pompe disease can receive either dried blood spot on filter paper or whole blood in tubes. See the enclosed sheet to learn how to contact the participating labs.

3. Send a bill. Bill should be sent directly to the local MDA office. Costs for the test, the procedure and any ancillary supplies will be paid in full.

Invoice Processing
Invoices will be processed through the patient’s local MDA office. If an individual from a different area attends your clinic and an invoice is received, forward it to the appropriate district office with a copy of the prescription.

⦁ Upon authorization by district staff, bills are then submitted to the regional office for processing in the usual manner. (Coded to 6030-5169).
⦁ Record invoices to the STARS system.
⦁ Be sure to install the new account code by typing the following URL and following the instructions.
